TOP HORSE RACERS: GRAND NATIONAL & CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL

The UK has a long history of horse racing and plays host to some of the biggest races and meetings in the world, with the two most important being the Grand National and the Cheltenham Festival.

The Grand National is a National Hunt jump race held each April at Aintree Racecourse. It sees around 40 horses running a 4-mile, 2.5-furlong course with 30 hurdles and plenty of spills and falls. The Grand National is the most betted on race in the UK and the most valuable jump race in Europe.

The Cheltenham Festival is a four-day National Hunt meeting that takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse each March. The Festival hosts more than 25 races and is home to some of the most prestigious horse races in the world, including the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Champion Hurdle, the Stayers' Hurdle, and the highlight of the four days, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Other top domestic horse races to bet on include the five flat races of the British Classics - the 1,000 Guineas, the 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks, the Derby and the St Leger Stakes. And of course, there’s the Ascot Gold Cup, run on the third day of the Royal Ascot meeting held each year in June, and the Epsom Derby held in June.

For jump racing, as well as the Grand National and Cheltenham, there’s the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, and the Hennessy Gold Cup run at Newbury each November.

You’ll also find horse racing betting markets and up-to-date horse racing odds for the major races around the world, like the Sheema Classic in Dubai, the Everest in Sydney, Paris’ the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Dubai World Cup, the North America Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Kentucky Derby. Each offers exciting racing and fantastic opportunities for horse racing betting.

HORSE RACING BETTING TIPS

Make the most of your horse race betting with Grosvenor Sport by:

NEW TO HORSE BETTING? START SMALL.

This tip says it all! If you’re new, you might want to start small on your bets. You will likely miss on some details and lose some races before you get the hang of it. Betting small will let you minimise your losses whilst you learn.

SET A BUDGET

Whether you’re new or a seasoned pro at horse race betting, setting a budget puts you in charge of your betting and prevents you spending more than you want to.

YOU DON’T NEED TO BET ON EVERYTHING

You’ll find plenty of races to choose from at Grosvenor Sport, from horse races across the UK and around the world, but remember, you don’t need to wager on all of them!

Check the details of each race carefully, and only bet on the ones that you’re confident with. Selective bets go a long way.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE RACES

Stay up to date with key statistics and the latest horse racing results. Watching races is important too, as it’ll give you the kind of insight you won’t get from any of the guides. Try to combine analysing the data and your gut instinct when making your betting selections!

ONLINE BETTING

We won’t say that betting online is better than the traditional betting styles. Yet, betting online does come with some big advantages.

You can compare stats and odds more easily, and you can wager on different major sporting events at the same time. Our online casino offers all the information and betting odds you’ll need to bet on horse racing and more to make the most of your betting experience.

UNDERSTANDING HORSE RACING BETTING TERMS

Understand some of the key terms in horse race betting:

Starting Price (SP) – The odds on a runner before the race begins. SP Bets are returned if the horse withdraws from a race, except for ante-post bets.

NAP Of The Day – NAP is the best bet of the day.

Next Best (NB) – While NAP stands for the best bet of the day, NB will show the second-best bet.

To win bet – You back a horse for a win.

To place bet – You back a horse to earn a place, usually first, second or third. If your horse comes in the top three places, you win.

Each Way – This is essentially two bets in one. You bet on the horse to win and to earn a place. The win is paid as the displayed win-odds. The place pays as a fraction of the win odds.

Grosvenor’s Pro Tip: When picking bets, our bet calculator gives you details on the stakes you’ve selected, the total amount, and the potential win amount. It’s the perfect way to plan your betting.

HORSE RACING FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO HORSE RACING ODDS WORK?

Horse racing odds are based on the probability of the bet happening. You’ll see odds written as fraction - like 3/1 to win. This means, if the race was run four times, it’s expected the horse would win once and lose three of the races. If you bet £1 to win at 3/1, and your horse does win, you’d be handed £3 winnings plus your £1 wager back.

WHAT KIND OF BETS CAN I PLACE ON HORSE RACING?

You’ll have plenty of options for horse race betting at Grosvenor Sport with our wide range of betting markets. If you’re new to horse racing, the simplest bets to make are for your chosen horse to win or to place (come first, second or third). An each-way bet on a horse combines both a win bet and a place bet. If your horse wins the race, you win both parts of the bet. If your horse finishes second or third, you just win the place part of the bet.

HOW SHOULD I PICK A HORSE TO BET ON?

Study the odds for a race so you understand which horses are the favourites and which are the outsiders. Take a look at the recent form of the horses to understand which are on a winning streak and which are underperforming. You can also cast your eye over the age and weights of the horses to look for younger and lighter runners, as well as take a look at the form of the jockey and the trainer too. Listening to expert tips can also help you narrow down your options.
