What is Poker?

Poker is one of the most popular casino card games across the world. The objective of the game is to try and make the best possible hand with the cards dealt to you, alongside the community cards (shared by all the players).

The basics of this table game are simple. You need to have the best hand out of all the players at the table. When playing solo against the dealer, the better your hand, the better the payouts!

At the start of the round, an ante bet is placed and then each player is dealt five cards (this varies by the type of poker game being played). Then, each player takes turns to action, either surrendering (called a fold), calling (adding an equal number of chips that matches the pot value) or raising (increasing the pot by putting more chips than the pot). These actions are based on the hand that you have. If you think you have a better hand, you might go for the calls and raises to win more. But if your hand is weak, folding might be the best way to go.

Each hand holds a particular ranking, royal flush being the highest and pairs being the lowest (again, this varies with the type of poker game being played).

Poker Variations

There is a range of poker variations, all with slight differences in the rules and play. They include:

Texas Hold’em

Players are dealt two hole cards, with five community cards on the table. The aim is to form the ultimate five-card hand using your two cards and any of the five community cards.

Omaha

Omaha poker differs due to the number of hole cards dealt to the players. Each player receives four hole cards. The aim is to then craft the best five-card hand using two of their hole cards and three community cards.

3 Card Poker

3 Card Poker is a little different. You play against the dealer, and you each get a hand of three cards dealt face down. You then grade your hands like a standard game of poker – with pairs, three of a kind, and flushes – with the best hand winning.

7-Card Stud Poker

There are no community cards in Seven-Card Stud. Instead, the players are dealt seven cards – four exposed and three concealed. The aim is to create the best five-card hand using the usual poker hands.

FAQs

What is the most popular version of poker?

There are many versions of poker played both online and in the casino, but the most popular variant across the world is undoubtedly Texas Hold’em. Unlike traditional poker, in Texas Hold’em two cards, also known as hole cards, are dealt face down to each player at the table. Five community cards are dealt face up in three stages. A round of betting occurs in between each stage. Players then try to win the pot based on the two cards they hold and the cards that are currently face-up on the table.

Live casino poker is also one of the most popular poker games being played online. This innovative variant involves real players, real dealers, and is streamed in real-time from the casino floor. Browse the live casino lobby, where loads of popular table games including live roulette await!

Is poker mostly luck or skill?

Poker is both a game of skill and luck. It is possible that the more you play and learn about the game, the greater your chances of winning. However, part of what makes the game so thrilling is the element of luck. On any one hand at any one time, a bit of luck can fall in your favour and change the outcome. Luck plays its part in single poker hands, but skill is the most important factor over the long term. The most highly skilled players can make a career out of it, like our sponsored poker pros.

What is the best poker hand?

The best poker hand depends on which version of poker you’re playing. In most games, an Ace-High Straight Flush, also known as a Royal Flush, is the best hand you can play. You’ll need an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10 all in the same suit.

How do you calculate the odds of winning a poker hand?

Learning how to properly count your outs and calculate the odds is important to succeeding in a game of poker. But before you can do this, you’ll need some basic maths skills. Check out this full guide on how to calculate poker pot odds, which helps you break down the maths behind the probability of your next big win on the felt.
