Win, place and each-way bets are the simplest wagers you can make on the horses. With a win bet, you simply back which horse you think will win. With a place bet, you back your horse to finish in the top places. This could be the top four or even up to the top seven in major races. If your horse finishes anywhere in the top places, your bet comes in.
An each-way horse racing bet combines both wagers, and consists of two bets. One to win and one to place. Both will come in if your horse finishes first, while only the bet to place will come in if your horse finishes second, third or fourth (or up to the number of available places).
Horse racing odds are straightforward to understand. Each horse running in a race will have odds to win. You’ll see these written as fractional odds, like 10/1 or 4/1.
The odds tell you two things:
Take the example of 4/1 odds. A horse with 4/1 odds in the Grand National has an implied probability of 20% of winning. That’s a one in five chance. If you backed a horse at 4/1 with a £10 bet, a successful wager would pay out 4x your stake. In this case, £40. You also get your stake back for a total of £50.
You’ll see the favourites have shorter odds and the outsiders longer odds. It means that if you back a favourite, there’s a higher probability of winning, but your payout will be smaller. With an outsider, there’s a lower probability of a win, but a higher potential payout on offer.
You can bet on every single race in the horse racing calendar with Grosvenor Sport. And for every race, you’ll see our horse racing racecards and form. The racecard details every runner in the race, with the corresponding jockey and trainer. You’ll see odds for each of the runners and the Starting Price once this is confirmed just before the race.
You’ll also see the age and weight of the horse, as well as their form from their recent races (up to their last six races). Checking the form alongside the odds can help you understand a horse’s potential chances of success in the race. And if you can predict a change in form, you can often find great value in the odds.
When betting on the horses, it’s helpful to understand some of the key terms, including:
Starting Price (SP) – The odds on a runner before the race begins. SP Bets are returned if the horse withdraws from a race, except for ante-post bets.
To win bet – You back a horse for a win.
To place bet – You back a horse to earn a place, usually first, second or third. If your horse comes in the top three places, you win.
Each Way – This is essentially two bets in one. You bet on the horse to win and to earn a place. The win is paid as the displayed win odds. The place pays as a fraction of the win odds.
The UK has a long history of horse racing and plays host to some of the biggest races and meetings in the world, with the two most important being the Grand National and the Cheltenham Festival.
The Grand National is a National Hunt jump race held each April at Aintree Racecourse. It sees 34 horses running a 4-mile, 2.5-furlong course with 30 hurdles and plenty of spills and falls. The Grand National is the most bet on race in the UK and the most valuable jump race in Europe.
The Cheltenham Festival is a four-day National Hunt meeting that takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse each March. The Festival hosts more than 25 races and is home to some of the most prestigious horse races in the world, including the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Champion Hurdle, the Stayers' Hurdle, and the highlight of the four days, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Other top domestic horse races to bet on include the five flat races of the British Classics: the 1,000 Guineas, the 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks, the Derby and the St Leger Stakes. And of course, there’s the Ascot Gold Cup, run on the third day of the Royal Ascot meeting held each year in June, and the Epsom Derby held in June.
For jump racing, as well as the Grand National and Cheltenham, there’s the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, and the Hennessy Gold Cup run at Newbury each November.

Horse racing betting is where you place a wager on an outcome in a horse race. You could back a horse to win a race or bet on it to finish in the top places, for example. If your horse racing bet is successful, it will pay out in line with the odds at the time you made the bet.

Horse racing odds are based on the probability of the bet happening. You’ll see odds written as a fraction, like 3/1 to win. This means, if the race was run four times, it’s expected the horse would win once and lose three of the races. If you bet £1 to win at 3/1, and your horse does win, you’d be handed £3 winnings plus your £1 wager back.
An each-way bet is a bet split into two separate parts (which actually form two bets). The first is to back a horse to win a race, and the second is to bet on it finishing in the top places. If your chosen horse wins, both bets will pay out. If it finishes second or elsewhere in the top places, only your bet to place will pay out.
A horse racing racecard is a detailed guide to the day’s races. On the racecard, you’ll see each of the horses running in the race and their odds of winning. For each horse, you’ll also see the jockey, trainer, age, weight and recent form across their last six races.
